The Sunderland Jewish Community has sustained yet another loss by the death on the Battlefield in France of Pte. Reuben Hyman, son of Mr and Mrs W Hyman of 12 Tavistock Place. The sad news was first conveyed to the parents by one of the officers of the regiment (East Yorkshire) who in a letter of sympathy praises the high qualities of the fallen soldier and dwells upon his great popularity among the officers and men of his unit. Having returned safely from the front line after a prolonged stay in the trenches, Pte. Hyman was hit by a fragment from a stray shell and was instantly killed. He was buried in an English cemetery where a Jewish officer from an adjoining regiment read the burial service. The deepest sympathy is felt for the aged parents who have lost a very kind-hearted, loving ad devoted son. His numerous friends will also miss Pte Hyman greatly and his name will be added to the steadily lengthening Roll of Honour of Sunderland; young men who have rendered honour to the Jewish name by their bravery, devotion to duty, loyalty unto death to king and country, as well as to the race and faith to which they belonged. This thought will, I hope, help to console the bereaved relatives and enable them to bear their loss with fortitude and strength.
