The Sunderland Jewish community has lost yet another young member. Mr and Mrs W Hyman of 12 Tavistock Place, had scarcely been able to dry their tears owing to the death of their son Reuben, who was killed in France some six weeks ago, when news reached them from the War Office that their son, Barnet, had been killed in action in France on April 19th.
Pte Barnet Hyman had not been long in the Army before he was sent into the firing line and was able to prove his bravery, intrepidity and devotion to duty. He had only just been transferred to a new Regiment, the Lincolnshires, when he was ordered to join in a night attack on the enemy's trenches and it was while advancing heroically on that errand that he was struck by a hostile machine-gun bullet and mortally wounded.
In a letter of sympathy addressed to the stricken parents, the officer commanding the battalion writes: - "He always showed himself to be a good soldier, carrying out his duties with the greatest steadiness and courage."
But Pte. Barnet Hyman was not only a good soldier, he was also a good son - carrying out his duties to his aged parents with the greatest steadiness, devotion and affection. The loss of two brave, devoted sons within a short space of time is a blow which even the strongest father and bravest mother could scarcely be expected to bear with composure. And yet we hope that the deep and genuine sympathy felt by us all for the grief stricken parents will help them to overcome their sorrow and to seek consolation in the knowledge that their sons did their duty unflinchingly and died heroically for a cause for which so many of our noblest have given their lives.
