When the war broke out, he was so keen to fight that even though he was only 16, he forged his age and pretended to be 18.

He joined the Royal Artillery and did very well and rose to become a Sergeant, but he was punished for riding an officer's horse and demoted to Private and stayed a Private for the remainder of the war.
