Charlie's father Leopold was very worried about him in France as he had heard of the high fatality rate concerned with what Charlie was doing. He spoke to the war office and said he was super intelligent and could be used for something other than as infantry.
Charlie ended up in Sweden and found his friend (and later brother-in-law) Frederick Baruch-Sholto who Leopold had also managed to get a job in the Intelligence.
Unfortunately, Charlie was arrested by the Germans and kept in prison for two years as a spy before being released and travelling to Belgium in 1916, where he stayed until the war finished.
