Dora, known as Nurse Black, had cards printed to advertise herself as a midwife in the Hightown/Lower Broughton area.
She worked with many of the doctors in the area, including Dr Schlossberg, Dr Graff, Dr Herson, Dr Levi and Dr Saul.
Dora would also show new mothers how to bath their babies, sometimes two or three at the same time, and when the bath was empty they would throw coppers in. These were her "perks" or "butt geld" as she called them, "bath money" in Yiddish.

Dora was an established midwife in the Lower Broughton area of Salford before the outbreak of the First World War, and continued this work throughout the 1910s. She worked from home, going to expectant mother's houses that were in walking distance or that she could get to by tram. They had a night bell in the house that was going day and night for urgent calls.
