Letter from the Chaplain, 1914
In a letter from a chaplain on the front Zeph Orman is mentioned as follows “conversing with a number of wounded men who had recently returned from the Front. I chanced to meet a Christian solder from the 4th Middlesex Regt. who in a glowing language endowed the opinions that I had already received upon the bravery of our Jewish soldiers in France…Pte Normand (Orman) was reported to be as being the principal signaller of his unit and most popular with all ranks. This Jewish soldier- I was told- had been in many posts of danger and bore and charmed life, my informant observed, moving fearlessly amid showers of bullets and shrapnel.” Private Orman died a week after this report was printed.
Death 1914
Private Orman enlisted with his older brother, Reuben, early on in the war. Both brothers fought in the trenches on the western front and died within two weeks of one another. Their names appeared side by side on the list of casualties printed in the Jewish Chronicle later that month.
