William was admitted aged 14 after being convicted of stealing a coconut, and being sentenced to one month in prison and five years reformatory.
Netherton, built in 1853, as a reformatory for ‘delinquent’ boys, was the only school of its kind that took Jewish boys and taught them separate of Christian worship. A Rabbi from nearby Newcastle would visit the school periodically to provide the Jewish boys with religious instruction.

Posting:
William first enlisted with the Manchester Regiment on his release from Netherton Reformatory in September 1885. He spent his first two years with the 1st battalion at Shorncliffe Camp in Kent.
In 1887 William was promoted to Lance Corporal in the 2nd battalion and posted to Agra, Bengal, East India.
In 1891, William took part in the Miranza Expedition in North-West India, before reverting to the tank of Private at his own request.
William was discharged in 1893, but re-enlisted several times in the next 13 years, before finally being discharged and awarded an army pension.
At the outbreak of war, William re-enlisted with the 3rd battalion of the Manchester regiment aged 48.
28/10/1915 He was based at the Manchester Regiment depot.
