Walter signed up on the 1 April 1914 as a 2nd Class Boy Seaman serving at HMS Ganges a training establishment in Suffolk. 10 days later he was promoted to 1st Class Boy Seamon, still serving at HMS Ganges, until 29th June when he was transferred onto the HMS Pembroke I. By December 11th when he moved to HMD Clan McNaughton, Britain was already at war.
He drowned whilst serving aboard the armed merchant cruiser HMS Clan McNaughton, which was lost, believed foundered, off NW Scotland 03/02/15. With no survivors. He was just 17.
