Mr Walter Richard Mortimer Woolf, who died in France on 26 September from wounds received on the previous day, was the younger son of Mr Mortimer Woolf, of London. He was born at West Hampstead 23 Sept. 1886 and educated at Clifton College.

Coming into residence in Oct. 1904 Mr Woolf rowed No. 3 in the “Getting On” boat of the Lent and May Races of 1905. In the following year he rowed at No. 7 in the 1st Lent boat, and Bow in the May boat and occupied the same position in the boat that competed in the Coxwainless Fours and in that which carried off the Thames Cup at Henley. In 1907 he again rowed Bow in the 1st May boat and at
No. 3 in the Henley Crew that brought back the Thames Cup for the second consecutive year.

After rowing at Henley he formed one of the Crew that the College sent to Hamburg Regatta. He graduated in 1907 in the Law Tripos and latterly had been practising as a Solicitor. On the outbreak of the war he obtained a Commission as 2nd Lieut. in the 2nd Battalion of the Border Regiment.

Many men will have happy recollections of his friendship while at Christ’s, and all who ever rowed with him will look back on those days with the greatest pleasure. He was extremely interested in the Boys’ Home at Camberwell and those who took part in it will remember the occasion when he entertained at his own home at Hampstead some of the men who went down to give a Concert there. Of a cheerful disposition, always willing, it is easy to understand how these qualities
which made him so popular in the College doubtless stood him in good stead among his brother Officers and men after he had joined His Majesty’s Forces.
