V. S. MOSES, 04 June 1917
The death in action on the 4th inst. Of 2nd-Lieut Vivian Sylvester Moses, R.F.A., only son of Mr. Samuel Moses, M.A. adds to the victims of the war one of the best, brightest and dearest of our boys. Our sorrow is that no one was more fit to live, our pride and consolation are that no one was so prepared to die. He was on of the most lovable of boys, greatly gifted, yet wholly modest, of exceptionally virile intellect, yet the personification of simplicity.
Inheriting all the talent of his father, his educational career was one of unbroken progress of success. In 1910, he gained the Senior Entrance Scholarship at University College School. In 1911 he obtained an Entrance Scholarsop at St Paul’s. There he passed easilyup to the highest rank in that great school and obtained an open Classical Scholarship at Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1916.
He became a cadet at the first opportunity and was given his commission in the Royal Field Artillery a few months later. In January of this year he went out to the front and he fell in action on the 4th of June. His career was assured. So also was the gift that career to the service of his people for it was his oft expressed desire to serve the community, and especially the Synagogue to which he was do deeply attached, and to which his father had rendered such eminent service. The national cause is great, beyond all gaissaying or cavil, nad a sacrifice such as that of this life is hallowed by its necessity. But it is a sacrifice in its curellest forms and it robs the world whileit enriches its record. His loss will leave its mark upon many saddned hearts and sympathy with his parents and sisters will be universal throughout the community.
The Lord hath given- raise unto Hi Name!
But with that praise our task is but begun.
The Lord has taken – still our thought the same
His Law our law, His Will, not ours, be done.
