Early in 1916 Nurse Violet Nathan, a Jewish woman, daughter of a couple in Birmingham, became a hospital sister in Southport, at the Grange Hospital, a large military hospital in Roe Lane, accommodating over five hundred wounded soldiers. She was a person the JC could advertise as an excellent example of the service of Jewish people in the War, as she was about to have seventeen male relatives serving in the Forces.
