The late Lieut. Victor B Barnett - Bayswater Synagogue
There was a large assembly last Sunday at the Bayswater Synagogue to witness the unveiling of the tablet placed in the vestibule of the synagogue by the Samson Lodge of Freemasons, in memory of the Late Lieut Victor Baron Barnett, Northumberland Fusiliers, who was killed in action in France and whose father is Secretary of the Lodge. The Service was perhaps the more telling for its brevity, the form being original and prepared by the Rabbi, the Rev. Professor Hermann Gollancz. The first portion of the service was conducted in the Synagogue, Dr Gollancz reading from the pulpit in English a number of appropriate Bible texts, followed by a recital in Hebrew and English of Psalm XVI. He thereupon proceeded to the vestibule, followed by the congregation and facing the memorial tablet, pronounced the words: "In humble submission to the inscrutable decree of the Eternal Disposer of Life, we now unveil this memorial tablet." He then offered up an appropriate prayer.
