Lieut. Sydney Morris Samuel, 26th Bn. Royal Fusiliers.
During the advance of September 26th, 29th and 30th, 1918, on Comines, he carried out his duties as battalion intelligence officer untiringly, and with utter disregard of personal danger. On several occasions he carried out a reconnaissance of the forward posts and of the position of units on the flank, though continually exposed to snipers and machine-gun fire. The information he sent back was accurate and contributed to the success of the advance.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the night of 13th-14th October, 1918. Near Gheluwe he taped out the forming-up positions for units of the brigade preparatory to the attack on the norning of the 14th October. It was largely due to the success of his efforts under heavy fire that the attack was so successful. Later he carried out a daring reconnaissance of our own front line and enemjy positions on the banks of the River Lys near Menin and brought back valuable information.
