Anger at Germans

Family legend
Sergeant Cohen was once put in charge of captured German prisoners. He felt such a hatred to the enemy that he refused to give them the water they requested.

Friendly with the commander

Family legend
Sergeant Cohen became friendly with his commanding officer. I seem to remember he was Captain Stuart Hirst Hampson, the owner of the Salford Reporter newspaper. The captain used to send the Cohen family the gift of a turkey each December.

Political activism in the inter-war years

Family legend
After the end of WWI, Sergeant Cohen was one of the founders of the Northwest England branch of the British Legion. In 1951 he was awarded Life Membership.

He became active in the struggle against Mosley's fascist movement in the 1930s. We have a photo of him addressing a crowd in St.Anne's Square along with some clergymen.

Awarded the freedom of a town in the Low Countries, 1951

Family legend
Apparently Sergeant Cohen was awarded the freedom of a town in the Low Countries in 1951 but did not live long enough to receive the honour
