The land in which the Hebrew cemetery is sited was given to the Hebrew community in the 1850’s by the then Duke of Sutherland, but as in Hebrew law land that is used as a burial ground must be bought, so the fee of £1 was charged for the land.

The first burial took place in the 1880’s about the same time as the first chapel was built. The original chapel was replaced in 1974, and has now made way for the new Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire Synagogue after the closure of the building in Birch Terrace, Hanley.
