The congregation was formed in 1873, and met in Hanover Street, Hanley. In 1902 they moved to Birch Terrace, which underwent a new construction in 1923, before the building was closed in 2004.
A successful Lottery Heritage Fund bid allowed the community to build a new synagogue in 2006 in London Road, Newcastle-under-Lyme.
