Details of his life

Sir Victor Sassoon who was the first British Jew to obtain a aviators certificate, was a member of the Sassoon banking family and was 30 years old when he obtained his Royal Aero Club aviators certificate no.52 on 28th January 1911. (The official announcement of the award read 'E. "Smith")

Sassoon joined the RNAS in November 1914 and the following February he sustained serious leg injuries when he crashed his Avro 504 at Dover. As a result he was only able to walk afterwards with the aid of two sticks. For the rest of the war he served on desk duties.

Sassoon was a fan of horse racing and his horses won the Derby and the Oaks, he is alleged to have said: "There is only one race greater than the Jews, and that is the Derby."
