Simon's father Colman was born in Crimea, and arrived in Grimsby with his wife Rachel in 1876. He officially set up his glass-selling business in July 1879.
After the First World War Colman handed over the running of the business to Simon.

What was the impact of this:
Simon was refused exemption from war service on the grounds of conscientious objection, however he was granted exemption on the grounds of domestic and business obligations.
Throughout the war Simon's business was granted several contracts from the government to glaze administrative and military buildings. He also travelled the country directing the replacement of glass in buildings damaged by enemy action.
The firm also replaced thousands of broken windows in West Ham after the Silvertown Munitions Factory explosion in January 1917.
