According to Geoffrey Adler in ‘The Jewish Community and Politics’, p46, During the Portsmouth election campaign of 1898, Herman Adler, then acting Chief Rabbi contacted the Jewish community in Portsmouth to encourage them to vote Conservative and not for the Jewish member, Sigismund F Mendl who was standing as a Liberal candidate – Mendl was elected the Liberal member for Portsmouth.
