Sidney's Chaplain, the Reverend Ellis Edge-Partington wrote to Mrs Torres: "In your sorrow, it will be a comfort to you to know that the battalion fought splendidly and with the rest of the brigade, took a village and over a thousand prisoners. Our casualties were not so many so that a large number remain whose sympathy, I know, goes out to you at home. May God comfort you with the knowledge that no sacrifice can go without reward, and that the future of England will grow out of the sacrifice of her noble sons."

Captain ER St John wrote to Mr Torres: "I can only say how much we shall all miss him, as he was very popular with officers and men, and I can only offer you my deepest sympathy in your great loss."
