His father, Alexander is listed in the 1911 census as an Estate Agent, but today would be known as a property developer; and, in an effort to make the various housing estates he built seem attractive, he usually acquired either a music hall or a picture palace in the vicinity. His younger brother Sidney inherited the business and went on to form Granada Television.
