Family legend

He volunteered for active duty on 26th September 1914, shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. He served with the London Battalion of the Royal Engineers in the British Expeditionary Force in France where, in July 1916, he was badly gassed. He was invalided home to Aldershot until being discharged "Being no longer fit for war service" on 15th March 1918; he died 4 years later of pulmonary tuberculosis. Listed on the Silver War Badge Roll, 1914-1920

A keen member of the Jewish Lads' Brigade from childhood, he rose to the rank of Drum-Major and was active in organising Brigade camps. He was also a keen runner, belonging to the Harriers Section of the Mile End Old Boys' Club.
