Samuel was sent to Netherton after being convicted of stealing 25 pairs of boots in December 1887 aged 13 and sentenced to 10 days in prison and 5 years reformatory.
Netherton, built in 1853, as a reformatory for ‘delinquent’ boys, was the only school of its kind that took Jewish boys and taught them separate of Christian worship. A Rabbi from nearby Newcastle would visit the school periodically to provide the Jewish boys with religious instruction.
