Heumann died on 10 September 1916, during the Somme Offensive, after his company had been ordered forward in response to a possible German counter-attack. Before doing so, Heumann held a conference in a shell hole, in which he died when a shell exploded above it, also killing Company Sergeant Major Mills and wounding Lieutenants Attenborough, Childs (fatally), and Ursell. Heumann had been mentioned in dispatches in June, for "gallant and distinguished service in the field".
