Samuel Claff, Raymond's father, was involved in many communal enterprises, including the establishment of the Jewish Hospital, Manchester Yeshivah and Holy Law Synagogue. He also went as a delegate to the 1st Zionist conference in London and the 1903 Basle Congress. When the family moved to Southport he was also involved in setting up the New Synagogue there.
