Biographical data: Born 7th October 1895 in London (3rd son of the late JOSEPH & NETTA JACOBS) Enlisted at Messrs Rothschild’s Bank, St. Swithin’s Lane, E.C., on the 1st Feb 1916 attended by the late Sir Lionel de Rothschild was the Recruiting officer. I was posted to the 3rd Territorial Battn of the Bucks Regiment of the Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry. On the 1.3.1917 I was gazetted as 2nd Lieut to the 3/19th London Regt. And proceeded o’seas to France with the 13th Battn. Kings Royal Rifle Corps. Whilst engaged in the Ypres Salient, I received an earnest message from the late Chief Rabbi, Dr Hertz to consider a transfer to the Jewish Regt. I obtained special leave to see Lt. Col. Patterson and my Uncle Major William Schonfeld . T.D.I. on the 24.1.1918 I was posted to the 42nd Battn. Royal Fusiliers. In the meantime I had been promoted to full Lieutenant. I was promoted A/Captain on the 12th June 1919 to 21/10/1919 when I proceeded home for demobilisation. During the 2nd World War I was recalled under the Officer’s Emergency Reserve on the 7th May 1940 and granted the rank of Paymaster. I was demobilised on the 18th September 1946. For your guidance I have served in H.M. Forces for a period of 10 years and 2 months which include 9 years and 1 month Commissioned Service. I am at present Vice-Chairman of the Monash Branch of the British Legion

MR PHILIP JACOBS By the death of Mr Philip Jacobs, Golders Green and the community at large have lost a devoted worker for both Jewish and general causes, writes Rabbi Dr Eugene Newman minister of Golders Green Synagogue. In the First World War he served as an officer in the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry and under General Allenby in the Jewish battalions in the Palestine Campaign in 1918. He was an honorary officer of the Golders Green Synagogue for several years. He was instrumental in bringing over refugee- children from Germany and looked after their welfare. In the Second World War, he rejoined the Army as a reserve officer and served as a lieutenant paymaster in the Pay Corps. After the war he was the hon. secretary of the British Committee of the Bet Hagedudim (the Museum of the Jewish Battalions) in Avichail, Israel. He was also active in the Monash branch of the 'British Legion and in the B’nei B’rith’
