Philip served in the Labour Corps alongside his older brother Abraham. Both born in Russia, they served in the specially created 9th (Russian) Labour Battalion.

Philip's commanding officer wrote a supporting reference for his naturalisation application after the war.

Philip injured his foot unloading ammunition from railway trucks in October of 1918. No disciplinary action was taken, as this accident was deemed to have not been the fault of Philip himself.
