How Philip Weinberg died: "Come on Boys, we will give the beggars socks!"

How Lieutenant Weinberg, of the 4th Black Watch died a noble death is described in a vivid manner by Private Andrew Leishman in a letter to his wife, who resides at 144 Lochee Road, Dundee.

Writing under date 13th inst., he says: – “This has been a terrible battle. Neuve Chapelle was hell let loose, but I don’t know how to describe this one. All day Sunday we faced death. We have lost a lot of men. I thought every minute was to be my last. My comrades were falling all around me. I seemed to bear a charmed life. Of course we are still in the danger zone. Lieutenant Weinberg was killed in the charge. He jumped on the parapet and shouted, ‘Come on, boys; we will give the beggars socks!’ He did not go far before he was riddled with bullets. That was an awful thing about the Lusitania. The men are all boiling about it. I have faced death about a thousand times this week. I hope I may never have to come through the same again. However, the Germans got it all right.”
