The pictures of Myer Newman were kindly provided by his grandson, Steven Goodman. Steven also shared with us a family legend about the origin of the family name, Newman. As a young man, Myer's father escaped army conscription by swimming from Russia to Austria, where he was promtly aprehended by a group of soldiers. Knowing that if he revealed his true name, Spector, he would be sent back, he reinvented himself as a 'new man' Neumann. This was later anglicised to Newman when Myer's brother Isador settled in Liverpool, where he was later joined by Myer. Their brother Lewis moved to Los Angeles and their sister Rachel died during the Holocaust.
