Details of the accident
Second Lieutenant Myer Joseph Levine was born in 1899, in Norwich, the son of Louis and Barbara Levine (née Hush), of Norfolk and North Shields, respectively. His father was a Pawnbroker and Antique dealer.
Myer enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps on his 18th birthday and was assigned to the 53rd Training Squadron based at Stamford Lincolnshire. He died on 8 May 1918 when the RE8 aircraft he was flying collided in mid-air over Stamford, both aircraft spun out of control to the ground, killing both trainee pilots and a flying instructor.
The Court of Inquiry decided that the cause of the accident was due (whilst the Pilots were on duty) to inexperience on the part of 2nd Lieutenant Levine in that he failed to turn his machine to the right when the leader Lieutenant Thorne (the pilot of the other aeroplane) did so and that Lt. Thorne had probably lost distance from the formation in carrying out two successive banks thereby causing the two machines to collide.
