Mr L Gallewski, 24 Frederick Street Sunderland, has received a letter from Sapper C. H. Stelling, now discharged from the R.E. concerning a brave act by his brother, Sapper M Gallewski, also a Sunderland man. Sapper Sterling says: - "We went into action in the early morning, and the shelling and rifle fire were pretty hot. While we were advancing part of a shell shattered my leg. I was lying in the open exposed to all sorts of danger and unable to move, when your brother came to me, bandaged my leg, then went back across the shell swept open cavity to get stretcher-bearers and came with them and got me safely to the field dressing station. He risked his life getting me to a place of safety and I am only sorry there was not someone there in authority at the time who could have recommended him for some recognition for his brave act. I may mention it became necessary to amputate my leg."
