Moses did not grow up a particularly Jewish man - he did not have a bar-mitzvah nor did he belong to a shul. This changed when he met Fanny, and married her as she was more religious. He initially wanted to name his daughter after his mother but Fanny refused, telling him that in Judaism one does not name a child after the living.
