Russia and story-telling

The whole family needed a horse and cart to transport their stuff from one village to another in Russia whilst they were leaving the pogroms. A neighbour lent them a horse and cart and they loaded it up and took it to the place where they were supposed to return it and a man came out and shot them all...
But when they were telling this story, granddaughter Sybil mentioned that it was very strange that if they'd been shot, why were they alive in Britain telling it? She was told to be quiet and sent to her room.
