Whilst serving on the Western Front, Morris contracted Pulmonary Tuberculosis, which caused him to be discharged as medically unfit in September 1918.

According to his medical records, Morris noticed a persistant cough in around March 1918 but did not report it until he was on leave in England in June 1918. He was treated as an outpatient at the 1st Western General Hospital in Liverpool, before being transferred to Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport on 5th July 1918. Sanatorium treatment was recommended.

Morris later died from this infection in December 1918 in City Hospital, Parkhill, Liverpool.
