Although Michael Julius Finklestone was born in Leeds, his early life was spent in Sheffield were his Father was the Head Teacher at the Hebrew School.
In December 1917 he joined the RAF and the following year after being promoted to Sergeant he was sent for officer training.
In 1924 Michael graduated in medicine from the University of Sheffield and two years later he changed his name to Michael Fenton. During the Second World War he served as a medical officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
