Ending up in the Welch Fusiliers
He was originally in the Machine Gun Corp but one day they took him to Wales and he joined the Welch Royal Fusiliers because a lot of them were injured and they needed people to fill in
On the Somme
He was involved in the Battle of the Somme and was buried alive, gassed and had shrapnel stuck in his arm.
German, Jewish POWs
He was a guard for the German POW and there were Jewish prisoners there, so he became friendly with soldiers who were on the other side.

After the war, he became part of the army of occupation so was only formally discharged from duties until 1921
