In 1916, family legend says that Max, and his two brother-in-laws Solly and Noah Sumroy, fled to Ireland to escape conscription into the armed forces, as they all had family in Berlin whom they didn't want to fight against.

Max appears on the electoral register in Leeds in 1913,14,15 and then not again until 1920, which could indicate that this was the time he was away.
