Military Cross Citation
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his platoon with great skill and dash to the attack and capture of an enemy position. Although wounded before the final assault, he led his men and captured thirty prisoners, afterwards helping to reorganise, until sent to the Dressing Station.
Notes from a fellow 2nd Lieutenant
2nd Lieutenant Richard F Ackerley served with Maurice in the same Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers, and was in action with him in the Steenwerck and Croix du Bec areas during the April actions where Maurice was killed.

Included in Richard's recollections is a moving extract about his friend's death:
"It was while we were organising that I gained contact with 2nd Lt. Bernstein M.C. on our right and we agreed on our plan of campaign. This was the last time I saw him as he must have been killed during the advance. I found his grave in a little burial ground just outside Croix-de-Bec when we visited there one time in France. He was a very nice chap and a credit to the Jewish race."
