The Knowle VAD Hospital Balcombe

The Balcombe VAD hospital opened on 7th. June 1915. A house in Stockcroft Road, named then ‘The Knowle’, was converted for the purpose by local builder Mr. Pierce.

The Commandant of the Hospital was Mrs. Leonard Messel of Balcombe House and the Quartermaster was Mrs. Oxley who lived at Monks. The hospital operated throughout the war, and had a total of 20 beds. From the data available, in 1917 a total of 165 patients passed through and in 1918, 132 patients were treated.

Early in 1919 it was announced that the Hospital was to close. During its five year existence over 600 patients had been treated. The Commandant and the Quartermaster placed on record their sincere appreciation of the work done and the interest shown by all those who helped to keep the hospital in operation as long as the military situation demanded.

Shortly after its close Mrs. Messel invited all those who had worked there to tea and entertainment at the Institute. Over one hundred attended to hear musical performances by a soprano, a contralto, a violinist and a pianoforte accompanist, together with an entertainer Mr. M. Woods.
