Marcus' studies at Leeds University were cut short by the outbreak of war, and he enlisted with the RAMC very early on in September 1914.
After returning from the war, Marcus established a successful fruit selling business, and then in 1929 was elected as an independent councillor for West Hartlepool Central Ward. Later, he became a Labour councillor, before being elected Alderman in 1941.
