Louis enlisted as a civilian into the Royal Flying Corps in 1916, and was transferred into the RAF in 1917.
He was a successful boxer, and whilst stationed at the Heliopolis Prisoner of War Camp in Cairo, took part in several boxing matches with both local men and fellow servicemen.
According to family legend, Louis married his first wife Celia to avoid conscription in 1916, but this didn't work as that same year he went into the Royal Flying Corps. They divorced when he returned from Egypt, and he married his second wife Hetty in 1921.
