Tragic sinking, 10 October 1918

Early in the war, young Lottie and her sister were sent to live in Ireland with their step mother from London, to be safe from the bombings. The stepmother also had the family fortune with them, in the form of gold sovereigns worn around her waist.

At the end of the war, the father sent for them from Birmingham. They boarded 'The Leinster' Royal Mail ship to return to England. When the u-boat attacked the ship, both children and the stepmum drowned, with both an unborn baby inside her and the family fortune. Everything was lost to the Irish sea.

Although the body was never found, the stepmum was declared dead so that Abraham could re-marry under Jewish law.
