It is unclear what happened but Lionel was wounded in action on the 17th of August 1916 and was permitted to wear a 'wound stripe' upon returning to service.
Death and Burial, 1918
Lionel was killed in action in 1918 and was buried in France, in 1938 his family, including his brother Arnold and nephew Lionel who was named after him visited his grave and paid their respects to their lost loved one. His nephew Lionel would return to France fighting in the Second World War only a few years later.
