Ernest Michael Green was an officer in the Jewish Lads’ Brigade, a member of St John’s Wood Synagogue and heavily involved in charity work with Jewish groups in the East End of London before he went to war in 1914, alongside his two brothers, Frederick and Brian. Only Ernest did not come home, but during the two years in France before his death on the 3rd of September 1916, he wrote 63 letters home to his family. These letters reflect not only the day-to-day experience of the trenches, but also his unwavering Jewish faith and dedication to his country.
