Leonard Fleet enlisted in the RFC on 16 May 1917 and worked at the records department at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough when at the beginning of August he was appointed to a temporary commission in the RFC as 2nd Lieutenant so that he could become a pilot. After learning the basics of flying at Cadet School he transferred to the 49th Training squadron in Doncaster. On 27 October he was killed on a solo flight training flight when his aeroplane, a Farman S.11 Shorthorn, No A6810 flew straight into the ground.
The Court of Inquiry into the accident heard that after examining the wreckage the cause of the accident was due to an error of judgement as the pilot had allowed the machine to come down too steeply which resulted in a nose dive.
