The whole family lived in the West End from the time of their arrival
in 1899 through the First World War and beyond, living in and around
Oxford Circus and Regent Street.

Kitty's daughter Fanny went to Deans Street School. She would have
been almost 8 when the First World War ended. The mug she received
was inscribed: "Peace. Victory with Honour, Freedom, Justice" and was
presented to her to commemorate the Peace Celebrations in 1919.

She was the eldest of 6 children, and although she did not arrive in this country until she was 10 years of age, and seems to have had only
limited schooling, she spoke without a trace of an accent and was very bright.

She had a hard life, although that was not unusual for the time. Her marriage to my grand-father was an arranged one, unlike it seems any of her siblings. She lost the sight in one eye due to a detachment of the
retina before she was 50, and had very limited sight in the other eye. Nevertheless after my grand-father's death in November 1952, she continued to live independently in Highgate running her shop until ill health intervened when she was just over 70.

Despite her orthodoxy she was an independent minded woman. So that her children and grand-children did not feel left out for the absence of Easter Eggs, she used to colour hard boiled eggs by boiling them in onion skins, adapting the process when Pesach intervened. Her wonderful kitchen in the basement of her home in Bisham Gardens, Highgate, was somewhere where the whole family gathered around a huge wooden table that was regularly scrubbed, and an oven range.
