Judah was admitted to the workhouse in 1896 at the age of just 9, before being sent to the Jews' Hospital and Orphanage Asylum, where he was living in 1901.

Judah, having begun going by the name Joseph Nissen, was admitted to the workhouse once more in 1913 due to homelessness.
