Joseph travelled from Minsk, then in Russia, by himself around 10 years old, arriving at first in Middlesbrough.
According to family, Joseph would go around working men's clubs and charm people and tell them he was a tailor. He'd then measure them up, but then get somebody else to actually make the suits! He was a very funny man, and everybody loved him.
His son, after service in the RAF during the Second World War, became an actual tailor.
