He had a good singing voice and took the Friday services for the Jewish soldiers fighting in Italy with him.
War office mistake
His mother and father received a telegram from the war office saying Joseph Prince had been killed in action. Some months later Joseph came walking down the street to the family's front door on leave to everyone's shock.
There was a mix-up with the army records - another man called Joseph Prince in the war had died and the mistake was made by the war office as their army numbers were the same except for one letter (the other Joseph Prince's number was 013835 and this Joseph Prince was 015835).
