On 23 August 1916 Joseph enlisted in the Army and served as a driver in 517 Company of the Army Service Corps. 517 Company was responsible for the transportation of supplies, guns, ammunition and men.
He served in Salonica, Egypt, Palestine and France.
On 27 February 1919 Joseph was admitted to hospital and was medically discharged on 16 May 1919
